As PostgreSQL deployments scale to handle "always-on" applications, managing connection overhead, ensuring high availability, and optimizing query traffic become critical challenges. ProxySQL, a high-performance open-source database proxy, is designed to solve these problems at scale.

This 3-hour hands-on workshop guides attendees through the architecture, configuration, and practical application of ProxySQL for PostgreSQL. We will start with a standard primary/replica PostgreSQL setup and systematically build a robust, highly available, and scalable database layer. Attendees will learn to implement intelligent connection pooling, read-write splitting, query routing, query firewalling, and automated failover detection.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this 3-hour training, attendees will be able to:

Explain the core architecture of ProxySQL and its advantages for a PostgreSQL cluster.

Install and configure ProxySQL to connect to a PostgreSQL primary-replica cluster.

Implement intelligent connection pooling to efficiently manage thousands of concurrent application connections.

Configure read-write splitting by setting up hostgroups to route queries to the correct nodes (primary for writes, replicas for reads).

Set up automated failover detection and graceful primary re-promotion using ProxySQL's built-in monitoring.

Use ProxySQL's query firewall and rewrite rules to throttle problematic traffic and optimize performance without application changes.

Monitor key performance metrics and cluster status using the ProxySQL admin interface.
